Extremely cold weather can be dangerous if you do not wear clothing that can withstand this. Extreme cold can cause freezing, hypothermia and eventually death. Therefore, avoid unnecessary suffering in extreme cold and wear enough layers of clothing to protect your body against wind, rain, snow and cold.
What do you need to protect yourself against extreme cold?

- Neck protector (such as a long facemask or face shield)
- Boots or moon boots (depending on the circumstances)

How do you protect yourself against extreme cold?
1. The bottom layer: thermal underwear
Every layer of clothing is important if you go outside in extreme cold, so make sure that your underwear is also in order. Thermal underwear with long legs / sleeves is a good basis (boxer shorts and a shirt with long sleeves).
Preferably choose polypropylene underwear, the thickest heat-retaining material there is. If you prefer to wear underwear made from natural fibers, go for wool or silk thermal underwear. In addition, wear at least two pairs of thick socks to keep your feet warm.
2. The middle layer: clothing made of wool, down or fleece material
Add a second layer of clothing made of fleece material, down or wool. With thick fleece pants and a woolen sweater, for example, you are well on your way to brave the icy cold. Choose lightweight clothing, because you still want to be able to move easily in the five-fold clothing layer that is needed to survive in extreme cold. You can also wear arm warmers.
Also avoid clothing made of cotton, as this material absorbs moisture fairly easily and does not wear up quickly in extreme cold. If you are in extreme weather conditions, this could even cause you to freeze to death by wearing cotton!
3. The upper layer: wind and waterproof jacket + pants
Complete your winter outfit with a jacket and outer pants that are both windproof and waterproof. Avoid outer clothing that is too loosely woven, so that the wind is free on the layers below. The best choice is a winter jacket with hood, so that your head gets extra protection.
The type of jacket and trousers that you need depend on the weather conditions you encounter. For example, dry air requires a different type of protective clothing than when the humidity level is very high.
4. Shawl, mittens and hat
Add a scarf, a pair of mittens and a cap to your bottom, middle and top layers. Mittens are better for your hands in extreme cold, because your fingers (as opposed to gloves) can touch each other and give off heat. This promotes the warmth in your fingers.
Wear the shawl over your mouth, so you don’t have to breathe ice-cold air and save your lungs. Instead of a shawl you can also wear a balaclava, facemaskor neck warmer. These face masks not only keep your neck, but also your face (and therefore lungs) warm.
5. Moon boots or boots with thick soles
Take great care in selecting a good pair of boots. In icy areas, opt for moon boots and in areas with little snow, opt for boots with a thick sole to keep your feet warm. Just to be sure, take a size larger than you are used to, so that the (three) double layer of socks also fits in the boots. Finally, make sure that your pair of boots has a good grip, is waterproof and has a warm lining.
Extra tips against extreme cold
- If you notice that you are starting to get colder, it is best to warm yourself up again by moving. Put it firmly in place and you will get it warmer again in no time.
- If you get warm and you take off one or more layers of clothing, do not forget to put them on again immediately when you stop moving. This way you can keep the new body heat with you for much longer and help you prevent freezing symptoms at a later time.
